In a world where so much energy goes into managing appearances and avoiding discomfort, courage and authenticity are radical acts of service. That’s why Courageous Authenticity sits at the top center of the Leadership Circle Profile®. It represents the intersection of truth-telling, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skill, and purpose. It’s about speaking truth with power and love, even when it’s risky—and doing so in service of the collective good.

Years ago, I was working with Eastern Airlines—a company that, at the time, was literally surrounded by barbed wire. You had to go through three layers of security just to get inside. The mechanics were on strike. The leadership team was divided. The entire culture had collapsed into fear and silence.

We brought 300 leaders together for a two-day meeting. Frank Lorenzo, who led the company, opened by saying: “Today we’re going to put everything on the table. We’re going to tell the truth about what’s really going on here—and we’re going to do it without fear.”

That set the tone. For two days, people practiced telling the truth and making it OK. They talked about what was really happening—what they saw, what they felt, and what they feared. Some of these people had worked together for 30 years and had never once spoken this openly.

By the end, everything changed. They solved the strike. They began to rebuild relationships. They started to heal the culture—not because they found a brilliant strategy or because one side caved to the other, but because they finally found the courage to be authentic with one another.

That’s what the Courageous Authenticity dimension of the LCP is about. It’s not just telling the truth—it’s creating a space where truth can be spoken safely. It’s learning to hold power and compassion in the same hand. It’s realizing that without this courage, teams disintegrate into politics and self-protection. With it, they can move mountains.

It sounds simple, but it’s no easy feat. Most environments work against it. But when we as leaders commit to the practice of being courageously authentic—to saying what’s real, to owning our part, to listening deeply—we create conditions where others can do the same. That’s when transformation becomes not just possible, but probable.

At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about being right. It’s about being real—and real is rarely comfortable. But when we speak the truth, we bring our full selves to bear. And when we do, we unlock the full potential of everyone around us.
