The world is more uncertain than ever. Market shifts, technological disruptions, geopolitical instability—change is relentless, and business doesn’t slow down to let leaders catch up. The temptation is to tighten our grip. To set clearer directives, demand more certainty, and create the illusion of control. But the reality? True control is a myth we cannot seem to stop believing.

You’ve probably seen the acronym “VUCA.” Though the term has been around for decades, it’s gained popularity in recent years, as the world—and conducting business within that world—grows increasingly complex. It’s shorthand for describing an environment or situation that is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Sound familiar?

If not, I think we’d all like to live where you live.

Regardless, in the midst of such a reality, leaders are still expected to make bold decisions, deliver on results, and keep their teams engaged. Not an easy task. Add to that the pressure of juggling multiple priorities, putting out fires, and anticipating the long-term needs of both the business and its people, and leaders can find themselves in a game where not only do the goal posts keep moving but the rules constantly change.

For even the most experienced leaders, it can be easy to think, “if I just work harder… If I manage everything more tightly… If I push for greater efficiency… I can keep all the balls in the air.” That may work in the short term, but the truth is, trying to control everything can quickly lead to burnout, blind spots, and shortsighted choices that create more problems than solutions.

The key is to respond, not react.

Great leadership isn’t about controlling every variable—it’s about responding with intention.

  • Pause before acting. Give yourself space to assess before making a move.
  • Seek perspective. Engage trusted voices to challenge your internal assumptions.
  • Focus on what’s within your influence. Don’t waste energy on what’s beyond it.
  • Create clarity and empower others. Help your people solve problems in their own spheres of influence.

Letting go of control can feel unsettling—even frightening. But waiting on the other side of fear is growth. The most effective leaders don’t shy away from uncertainty; they step into it with courage. For it’s in the unknown, not in the illusion of control, that we find clarity and wisdom, and where we can truly become the difference the world needs.

So, remember: You can’t control feeling uncertain, but you can choose how you engage with your uncertainty. When leaders meet VUCA with presence, clarity, understanding, and vision, they can turn disruption into opportunities for growth.

The question is, how will you engage with your uncertainty?
