As another school year begins, we’re reminded of the quiet devotion of teachers. While many of us are wrapping up summer routines, teachers are calming first-day jitters, learning dozens of new names and faces, and seeing potential where others might only see uncertainty. Their work is unseen by most, but it shapes the future for all. In many ways, it’s a masterclass in leadership.

Long before the first bell rings, teachers are preparing—thoughtfully planning lessons, organizing classrooms, and readying themselves to ignite curiosity in the hearts and minds of their students. They stand ready not only to teach, but to guide, encourage, and care.

What strikes me most is that their leadership doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Teachers are stewards of the hallways, the playgrounds, the cafeterias, the sidelines. They don’t just transfer knowledge; they build confidence, nurture growth, and expand what’s possible in the lives of their students. They balance both the art and science of calling forth the best in others.

Whether guiding preschoolers through fingerpainting or graduate students through advanced biochemistry, teachers carry a presence that shapes culture and unlocks potential.

That is the essence of great leadership.

To lead is to see potential where others might not, to create an environment where people feel safe to stretch, to challenge, and to grow. It’s to remember that the true measure of leadership isn’t in what you accomplish alone, but in what you make possible for those around you. It’s focused on impact, not titles. Care, not cost. But most of all, it is about creating a future where others can thrive. Great teaching truly is future-focused, and yet it’s grounded in the present in a way few professions are.

If you think about the teachers in your own life who influenced you, what did they have in common? How did they show up with purpose and presence to guide you? Remembering the impact a great teacher had on us—and following that guidance—can often have a ripple effect on our lives and the lives of others that even the teacher couldn’t have imagined.

As learners at all levels head back to school, may we honor the teachers among us by following their example. Prepare with care. Show up with presence. Lead with both rigor and heart. At the end of the day, great leadership isn’t only good business—it’s the most human and noble work we do.
