Change that holds—real, sustainable change—always starts within the people who lead it. The deeper the roots of awareness, the farther the reach of impact. When courage meets consciousness, leadership becomes more than a role. It becomes a movement.
This week, Cindy and I are at beautiful Deer Hollow Resort in Park City, Utah, leading a remarkable group of practitioners through certification in Leadership System™, our cohort-based program for ongoing leadership development at scale.
Every time we teach this work, I’m reminded of something simple but profound: real change doesn’t start with the system, it starts within the people who lead the system. This week, we’re training coaches to help their clients explore the patterns and dynamics that shape organizational life, but before long, the conversation always turns inward. Leaders start seeing the ways their own mindsets, fears, and assumptions are woven into the system itself. And when that awareness shifts, the system begins to shift, too.
That’s what we mean when we say: go deep to play big.
When leaders go deep—when they confront what’s real, when they’re open to feedback, and when they choose growth over comfort—they unlock the capacity for collective transformation and discover the leverage to lead differently. The change that begins with one leader starts to ripple out across teams, functions, and ultimately, an organization’s culture.
And that’s where the movement begins.
Creative leadership inspires movement—within self, within systems, within society. It’s what happens when courage and consciousness intersect. When leadership becomes less about control and more about possibility.
That’s the work we’re doing here this week: helping leaders (and those who develop them) create the systems they need to go deep and foster the kind of movement the world needs now.
It’s some of my favorite work, and it calls me—again and again—to go deep, so I can play big alongside others.
