The moments that challenge us most often hold the greatest potential for growth—if we’re open enough to learn from them. True leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about showing up, again and again, with awareness, humility, and a willingness to evolve. In our work, one Creative Competency captures this better than any other: Personal Learner.
Personal Learner begins with a deceptively simple invitation: to be open.
Open to what’s happening in the moment.
Open to what’s being stirred in me.
Open to the idea that there’s always something more to see—and more to learn.
Recently, a leader I was working with came at me in a way that felt threatening. My first reaction, naturally, was to feel threatened myself. But then, I paused long enough to let something shift inside me. I realized: They’re not being threatening on purpose—they’re feeling threatened. That recognition created space in me. Space to be curious, not reactive. Space to move toward compassion rather than defense.
That experience reminded me how often growth begins just at the edge of our triggers. If I’m willing to open, to quiet down, to listen—really listen—to what’s going on inside of me, I can choose a different response. I can learn from the moment rather than just survive it. It’s a practice that, in today’s urgency-obsessed culture, can feel radical.
There are two questions I want every leader to ask themselves:
- How self-aware am I?
- What do I pay attention to?
Because here’s the truth: Leadership is a practice field. For us to deploy ourselves on that practice field, we must learn from it.
Personal Learner sits at the heart of that work. If I’m not learning—moment by moment, situation by situation—I stay stuck in old patterns. But when I’m open to learning, I begin to shift from a Reactive mindset to a Creative one. I move from defending my identity to deepening my impact.
That’s what this work is all about.
