One of the most powerful acts of leadership is painting the picture of a future worth striving for. When leaders express a vision that is rooted in purpose, they invite others into something greater than themselves. They don’t impose a direction; they stir something within. In the presence of visionary leadership, we can’t help but reflect: What do I care about? What am I here to create?

Vision catalyzes alignment. And alignment isn’t about conformity, it’s about shared purpose. When people see how their own purpose is reflected in their organization’s vision, something shifts. Energy rises. Ownership deepens. True enrollment begins…not because they’ve been convinced, but because they’ve been called.

I saw this play out years ago with a company called GOJO Industries in Akron, Ohio. GOJO makes industrial hand soap—important work, but not the kind that usually inspires big dreams. On the surface, it was a classic manufacturing story: working-class employees clocking in every day to produce a cleaning product. Those workers on the factory floor were skilled and dedicated, but their positions rarely offered a clear line of sight to the results and impact of their labor. Many spent long hours on their feet and left their shifts with sore backs, tired hands, and the quiet fatigue that builds over years of doing essential but often overlooked work.

Recognizing this, GOJO sought to bring its purpose and vision to life, making a deliberate choice to connect every employee to a deeper mission: healthy skin for all. The leadership wanted their factory workers see that they weren’t just producing soap, they were improving lives.

They brought in mechanics who had used GOJO products; tough, gritty workers whose hands were once so calloused and damaged that they couldn’t even touch their kids without feeling significant pain. But after using GOJO products, like their heavy-duty orange cleaner and Hand Medic, these gruff workers shared that, for the first time in years, they could hold their spouses’ hands and pick up their children in the way they’d always wanted. Their skin had healed. Their lives, and even their relationships, had changed because of the products GOJO factory workers made every day.

That’s the power of purpose. It turned a job on a manufacturing line into a mission to improve lives. Workers realized they were doing something that mattered; not just to the company but to themselves. It gave every person in the organization a reason to care more, reach further, and take pride in their work together. That realization sparked a new level of commitment, energy, and alignment.

That’s what happens when vision becomes tangible and the work connects to something larger than the task at hand.

This is the discipline of leadership: to create and embody a vision that connects, enrolls, and elevates. To listen deeply enough to refine it. And to lead in a way that brings purpose to life—not just for ourselves but for everyone we lead.
